Govt Plans Low-Cost Petrol Scheme for Motorcycles and Rickshaws

26 March, 2026 12:12

March 2026: The government is planning to introduce a new system to provide low-cost petrol to selected individuals, mainly targeting motorcycle and rickshaw users across Pakistan. The move is aimed at supporting low-income commuters who rely on these vehicles for daily travel.

According to sources, the scheme will work through a quota-based system, where only approved users will be able to access subsidised petrol. The goal is to reduce the financial burden on millions of people affected by rising fuel prices.

Officials say the government is developing a digital system in coordination with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority and other departments. Under this plan, users will register their vehicles and national identity details to become eligible for the subsidy.

A mobile application will be introduced to manage the process. Users will receive digital vouchers through the app, which can be used at petrol pumps. The fuel stations will verify the quota and provide petrol accordingly. Once a user reaches their limit, they will not be able to get additional subsidised fuel.

The initiative is designed to ensure that subsidies reach only deserving individuals while also controlling fuel consumption. Authorities believe this system will help manage resources during a time of rising global oil prices and supply challenges linked to Middle East tensions.

Currently, the focus is on motorcycles and rickshaws, as they make up a large portion of Pakistan’s transport system. However, discussions are ongoing to expand the scheme to include small cars under 800cc in the future.

Officials say the decision comes as increasing fuel prices have added pressure on daily commuters, making it difficult for many to manage transportation costs. The proposed plan is expected to provide relief if implemented effectively.
