How teenagers can open their own bank account – check details

In a major move for youth empowerment, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has introduced a new framework allowing teenagers to manage their own finances.

For the first time in Pakistan, young people aged 13 to 18 can open and operate their own bank accounts and digital wallets without needing a parent or guardian to be a co-owner. This gives millions of minors the freedom to handle money independently.

Previously, minors could only open joint accounts or accounts controlled by guardians. While this ensured safety, it limited teenagers’ ability to:

• Use banking systems independently
• Access digital financial services freely
• Learn practical money management skills

The SBP’s initiative moves from “oversight” to “empowerment,” helping teens gain real financial experience.

Key Features of the New Framework:

• Sole Ownership: Accounts can be held entirely in a teenager’s name.
• Independent Operation: Teens can deposit, withdraw, and make transactions—including using digital wallets—without needing permission for each action.
• Built-in Safeguards: Accounts have security measures and protections designed for younger users.

This policy is expected to benefit around 26 million teenagers in Pakistan. By involving youth in the formal financial system, the SBP hopes to promote digital banking and a cashless economy.
