Electricity Price May Increase by 26 Paisa per Unit, CPPA Moves NEPRA

17 April, 2026 12:03

ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers may face another increase in power tariffs as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an adjustment of 26 paisa per unit.

According to official details, NEPRA will hold a hearing on CPPA’s application on April 28. The request is part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism, which allows changes in electricity prices based on generation costs.

The CPPA stated that during March, a significant portion of electricity was generated from different sources. Around 23% of electricity was produced from hydel resources, while nuclear plants contributed 22% to total generation.

The report further showed that 30% of electricity was generated from local and imported coal. Gas-based plants contributed 10%, while regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) accounted for 5% of total electricity production.

Officials say that changes in fuel prices and generation mix directly impact electricity costs, which are then passed on to consumers through monthly adjustments.

If approved by NEPRA, the proposed increase will reflect in electricity bills for consumers across the country, adding further pressure on households already dealing with rising utility costs.

The final decision will be taken after the NEPRA hearing on April 28, where CPPA’s data and justification will be reviewed in detail.
