100-Acre Mariculture Estate Planned at Korangi Fisheries Harbour

KARACHI: Pakistan has proposed the establishment of a 100-acre Mariculture Investment and Development Estate (MIDE) at the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority to support fisheries, aquaculture, investment and the country’s blue economy.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry outlined the plan during a briefing on the proposed project.

The proposed estate would bring together mariculture and aquaculture operations, hatcheries, research and innovation, seafood processing, value addition, cold-chain facilities and commercial services.

According to the concept master plan, the estate will include a 30-acre mariculture zone, a 20-acre hatchery zone, a 20-acre aqua research park and a 20-acre commercial district.

The project is intended to support modern marine farming, improve aquatic seed production and expand value-added fisheries activities.

Modern infrastructure, cold-chain facilities and processing capabilities are expected to help improve the fisheries supply chain and create opportunities for investment and exports.

The initiative is also being presented as part of broader efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s coastal economy and increase economic activity in the fisheries sector.
