Cipher case : special court indicted Imran Khan, Qureshi again, witness statements from tomorrow

Former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were indicted in cipher case by a special court in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail today.

Special court’s Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain issued the verdict that framed charges against the two PTI leaders.Both Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi pleaded not guilty to their involvement in the offence related to the alleged misuse of a confidential document (cipher).

The statements of the witnesses will be recorded from (tomorrow) Thursday. The FIA submitted a list of 28 witnesses to the court with the challan after recording their statements under Section 161.

Imran Khan and Qureshi were charged under sections 5 and 9 of the official secrets act (OSA). Both leaders were initially indicted in the case on October 23.

On November 21, Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared their jail trial “null and void” while allowing their intra-court appeals in the case. However, the federal cabinet yet again approved the summary of holding the jail trial of both politicians following which the trail continued, leading to the indictment of both Khan and Qureshi today.

The hearing was then adjourned till tomorrow (December 14).
