Colombia announces to open embassy in Palestine

23 May, 2024 16:46

Colombia has ordered the opening of its embassy in Palestine, restoring diplomatic ties with the Arab nation.

“President Gustavo Petro has directed to open embassy in Ramalla,” Columbian Foreign Affairs Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo to reporters.

He said the Colombian president had informed Palestinian Ambassador Rauf al-Maliki of his intention last year. Recently, Colombia has announced that it was severing ties with Israel. The Petro’s government had withdrawn its diplomats from Israel and severed diplomatic ties on May 2 after describing Tel Aviv’s actions in Gaza as a genocide.

The Colombian president condemning the Israeli actions in Gaza genocide called for action against Israel.

The Columbian foreign minister said they are sure that more and more countries would recognize Palestine. This is nothing against Israel or the Jews, he added.

It should be remembered that Spain, Norway and Ireland also announced the recognition of Palestine as a state yesterday. Saudi Arabia welcomed this initiative of Western countries, while the US President Joe Biden termed the process of recognizing the Palestinian state as hasty.
