CSK name MS Dhoni’s successor

After 16 years of memories MS Dhoni has finally stepped down from Chennai Super Kings captaincy.

The bomb shell development was revealed on the eleventh hour when all captain gathered for the photoshoot with the Indian Premier League trophy.

Indian opener Ruturaj Gaikwad has been appointed as the leader of the Yellow Briagde for the ongoing season.

The former India skipper is in speculations about finishing up his iconic career after IPL 2024. This is only the second time he stepped away from the leadership role in the tournament. The ICC World Cup 2011 winning caption had relinquished CSK captaincy before the start of IPL 2022.

During that 2022 season, another CSK icon all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja led the franchise.

Following CSK’s unimpressive start under Jadeja, Dhoni returned to the post in the same season. Nicknamed Thala, the CSK gloveman was re-appointed as captain after eight games at the time.

A season later, CSK bounced back from a forgetful under Dhoni’s leadership. The Ranchi stalwart guided Chennai to a record-equalling fifth title in the 2023 season of the IPL.

“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024,” CSK said in a statement.

“Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period,” it added.

Dhoni after winning the tournament in 2023 had asserted that the 2024 campaign would be a ‘gift’ to his fans.

Overall, he has won 128 games and lost 82 as captain of CSK. He captained CSK in 212 matches. The former India skipper bid farewell to international cricket in on August 15, 2020.
