Burqa city director Fabrice Bracq surprised by similarities with Laapataa Ladies
Laapataa Ladies is under scrutiny for alleged plagiarism after a video comparing it to the short film Burqa City went viral. In the video, scenes from Laapataa Ladies closely resemble parts of Burqa City, directed by Fabrice Bracq. The director has now shared his thoughts on the controversy in an interview with India Today.
Bracq mentioned that right before seeing Laapataa Ladies, he had recognized that basic plot similarity and after watching the movie, he was stunned to see so many other elements from his original idea. He specifically called out the feature of two husbands: one was nice and innocent, he lost his wife, and the other was cruel, violent.
He also noted the presence of a dishonest and threatening police officer and his two helpers which referred back to Burqa City. He also noticed an incredible similar aspect to Burqa City was when the husband searches in several shops for the wife, showing the shopkeeper a photo of the wife with her face covered, like what occurred in Burqa City.
Bracq also emphasized that both stories end with the revelation that the woman deliberately ran away from her abusive husband, with both films conveying a feminist message about women’s empowerment and freedom.
Biplab Goswami, the author of Laapataa Ladies, has responded to the allegations and defended the film by stating that the screenplay was a product of a long period of writing, and that the story was registered in 2014 under the title Two Brides.
He furthermore revealed that he had finished and registered the complete script in 2018, claiming that the similarities were merely a coincidence.
