As tensions grow between India and Pakistan, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has made a list of well-known Pakistani YouTubers who are accused of posting videos against the country and the military.
The PTA has asked the federal government for permission to block these Pakistani YouTubers. This is part of a bigger plan to stop online content that could harm national security or disturb public peace during this tense time.
Famous YouTubers named in this list include Imran Riaz, Sabir Shakir, Siddique Jan, and Shahbaz Gill. Some channels, like those of Ahmed Noorani and Waqar Malik, have already been blocked and can no longer be seen in Pakistan.
The PTA has also contacted YouTube and asked them to take action against these accounts. However, no further steps will be taken until the government gives final approval.
A PTA spokesperson confirmed that some Pakistani YouTubers are being looked at for spreading content that is seen as against the army. Due to privacy rules, the full list of names has not been shared with the public. “We will act only after the government tells us to,” the spokesperson said.
So far, the PTA has blocked more than 3,200 YouTube channels for posting content against Pakistan. In total, over 119,000 websites and links with illegal material have been banned.
The PTA has also suggested blocking 68 Indian YouTube channels in Pakistan.
The spokesperson explained that while the PTA can block and remove online content, arrests and other legal actions are the job of law enforcement agencies. Offenders can be punished under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PICA) and the Pakistan Penal Code.
