Bollywood actress and BJP Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut has sparked controversy once againโthis time for her comments about Zahran Mamdani, who recently made headlines after a significant political win in the U.S.
Zahran Mamdani, son of celebrated Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and author Mahmood Mamdani, recently triumphed in the Democratic Partyโs internal primary for the New York mayoral race. He defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who accepted his loss gracefully. Zahran secured over 43% of the votes, while Cuomo received 36%, according to international media reports.
Zahranโs victory positions him as a strong candidate to become New York Cityโs first Muslim mayor. In response, Kangana took to X (formerly Twitter), saying: โZahranโs mother Mira Nair is one of our finest filmmakers. She has been awarded the Padma Shri and is a daughter India should be proud of, living in New York.โ
She added: โMira married renowned author Mahmood Mamdani, who is from Gujarat, and their son is named Zahran.โ
However, her following statement drew widespread criticism. โHe seems more Pakistani than Indian. Something has clearly happened to his Hindu identity and blood โ they are ready to erase Hinduism,โ she wrote.
Many social media users and political observers have condemned Kanganaโs remarks, accusing her of communalizing a political achievement and using religion to divide.
