Kenneth Colley Cause of Death; Star Wars Actor Dies at 87

British actor Kenneth Colley, best known for his role as Admiral Piett in Star Wars, has died at the age of 87. He passed away peacefully on Monday, June 30, in Ashford, Kent, after complications from Covid-19 and pneumonia.

His agent of 10 years, Julian Owen, confirmed the sad news. Colley had recently been admitted to the hospital due to a fall that injured his arm. While there, he contracted Covid, which led to pneumonia.

“He passed away peacefully with friends at his bedside,” said Owen in a statement.

A Long and Respected Career

Kenneth Colley had a 60-year career in film, television, and stage. He was known for his wide range of roles. Star Wars fans remember him as Admiral Piett, the Imperial officer who appeared in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. His character was one of the few to survive Darth Vader’s command.

He also voiced Admiral Piett in the 2012 animated film Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out.

Outside of Star Wars, Colley had notable roles in movies like Monty Python’s Life of Brian, where he played Jesus, and in Ken Russell’s films, often portraying dark or eccentric characters. He acted alongside Clint Eastwood in the Cold War thriller Firefox, and starred in the WWII series War and Remembrance.

A Passionate Artist and Fan Favorite

His favorite role, according to his agent, was Estragon in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, performed at London’s Cockpit Theatre in 2014.

Kenneth Colley was a favorite among fans of the original Star Wars trilogy. He regularly attended fan conventions around the world, where he was warmly received by the community.

“Ken Colley was one of our finest character actors,” his agent added. “He loved his garden, art collecting, and had a passion for fast cars.”
