Pakistani YouTuber Rajab Butt may land on interpol’s wanted list – here’s why

21 August, 2025 14:26

Popular Pakistani YouTuber Rajab Butt is facing three serious inquiries, including blasphemy and gambling promotion, according to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).

In an interview, Sarfraz Chaudhry, Additional Director of NCCIA, said that two inquiries are about blasphemy—one filed by Muslims and the other by Christians—while the third case is about promoting gambling.

He added that Rajab Butt left Pakistan in June, right after the blasphemy inquiry began. His name has already been placed on the Exit Control List (ECL).

Chaudhry explained that if Butt returns to Pakistan, he will be arrested immediately. If not, an FIR will be filed and an arrest warrant will be obtained from the court. If Butt does not appear within a month, a permanent warrant will be issued, and later, Pakistan can request Interpol to issue a Red Warrant for his arrest.

Currently in UAE

Reports suggest that Rajab Butt is currently in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Pakistan and the UAE have a prisoner exchange agreement, which means he could be extradited if Interpol approves the request.

Chaudhry also said that under Section 88 proceedings, Rajab Butt’s properties can be confiscated, his bank accounts frozen, and even his identity card blocked.

However, he pointed out one challenge: while blasphemy is considered very serious in Pakistan, many Western countries view it differently, which makes it harder to get Interpol to act.

The case of Rajab Butt remains ongoing, and authorities say they will continue legal steps both inside Pakistan and abroad if he does not cooperate.
