Taylor Swift’s Necklace Controversy Explained: Why Her Lightning Bolt Merch Triggered Online Debate
Taylor Swift’s major Disney+ reveal has been overshadowed by an online controversy. The singer announced a six-part docuseries titled “The End of an Era” along with a concert film of her final Eras Tour show, both set to stream this December.
However, attention quickly shifted to one of her new merchandise items — a silver-tone necklace featuring lightning bolts, clear CZ crystals, an opalite star, and a Taylor Swift charm.
The jewelry piece has sparked criticism, with some claiming its design resembles Nazi SS symbols. According to The Holocaust Explained, the SS were Hitler’s elite paramilitary force, responsible for enforcing Nazi ideology through terror and selected for “racial purity” and absolute loyalty.
While some argue the necklace mirrors the Sig rune used by the SS, others insist the lightning bolts reference Swift’s own lyrics, such as “dancing through the lightning strikes,” and believe the backlash is exaggerated. Swift’s team has not commented on the issue, leaving her Disney+ moment overtaken by debate over symbolism, intent, and online perception.
