Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa, widely known for his role in the Amazon Prime series The Family Man, passed away suddenly on February 7, 2026, in Kathmandu. Thapa, a towering figure in Nepali cinema, had a prolific career spanning over 300 films and was recently seen portraying ‘David Khuzou’ in The Family Man 3. Fans and colleagues alike are mourning the loss of the legendary star while seeking clarity on the cause of his untimely death.
What caused Sunil Thapa’s sudden demise
According to multiple reports, Thapa’s death was caused by cardiac arrest. Rajendra Bahadur Singh, chairperson at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, revealed that Thapa was brought to the hospital unconscious. An ECG conducted at 7:44 am confirmed his death. Speaking to The Post, Singh stated:
“He was unconscious when he was brought in. An ECG was done immediately, which confirmed his death.”
Sunil Thapa’s career highlights
Before entering films, Thapa began his career as a model in Mumbai in the mid-1970s, representing several clothing brands, and also played professional football for clubs in Bombay. He briefly worked as a photojournalist, covering events such as the Bhutanese coronation in 1974.
Thapa gained immense popularity in Nepali cinema for his antagonist roles, most notably as ‘Rate Kaila’ in Chino. He won multiple awards, including the Motion Pictures Award Nepal twice, and was renowned as one of the most sought-after villains in the industry.
Presence in Indian entertainment
Thapa also made his mark in Bollywood, starting with Ek Duuje Ke Liye alongside Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri. He earned recognition for his supporting role in Mary Kom, which garnered a Filmfare nomination. His latest appearance was in The Family Man 3, portraying a respected local leader in Nagaland. Thapa also served as the chairperson of the Everest Film Academy.
Family and personal life
Sunil Thapa is survived by his wife, Rajani Limbu, who stood as his pillar of support throughout his life. The couple had two children, while other family members reportedly reside in Mumbai. Thapa had been living in an apartment in Kathmandu at the time of his death.
