Reports indicate that his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed for divorce after 27 years of marriage, citing infidelity, mental cruelty, and emotional neglect as the primary reasons.

Sangeetha Sornalingam maintains a low public profile. Born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai, she is 51 years old as of February 2026, the same age as Vijay. Of Sri Lankan Tamil descent, she is the daughter of a London-based industrialist and was raised in the United Kingdom, holding British citizenship prior to marriage. Reports describe her as a homemaker, entrepreneur, and social worker, with a personal net worth estimated at around Rs. 400 crore.

The Love Story

Vijay and Sangeetha’s romance began in 1996 when she, a fan of the actor, travelled from London to Chennai to meet him following his breakout role in Poove Unakkaga. Impressed by her sincerity, Vijay invited her to meet his parents, filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha.

The couple began dating the same year and tied the knot in 1999 after receiving familial approval. They initially registered their marriage in the UK in 1998 and later celebrated grand ceremonies in Chennai on August 25, 1999, incorporating both Hindu and Christian rituals to honour their respective backgrounds.

Allegations Leading to Divorce

Sangeetha Sornalingam has reportedly filed for divorce at the Chengalpattu Family Court, accusing Vijay of infidelity and mental cruelty. She claims to have discovered in April 2021 that the actor was involved in an extramarital relationship. While the petition does not name the alleged third party to protect privacy, social media speculation frequently links the affair to his Leo co-star, Trisha Krishnan, though these reports remain unverified.

The petition further alleges that Vijay became emotionally distant, withdrew from conjugal life, and subjected her to public humiliation. Multiple attempts to resolve the issues amicably between 2021 and 2025 were unsuccessful, leading Sangeetha to conclude that their relationship is “irretrievably broken.”

A court notice has been issued for Vijay to appear in person on April 20, 2026. Neither Vijay nor his representatives have made an official statement regarding the divorce filing.
