Who Is Mae Martin? Toronto Comedian to Make History as First Non-Binary Host of JUNO Awards 2026

Canadian comedian, actor, and writer Mae Martin is set to host the JUNO Awards 2026, becoming the first non-binary individual to lead Canada’s most prestigious music event.

The Toronto-born performer will take center stage in Hamilton while balancing a packed schedule, including their first nationwide stand-up tour titled The Possum. Known for their versatility across comedy, acting, and writing, Martin continues to expand their influence in the entertainment industry.

Speaking about the demanding schedule, Martin said, “I might be off my rocker,” adding, “Hopefully, I’ll be fighting fit from doing a bunch of shows. I’ll be hopefully on my game.”

In addition to hosting duties, Martin is also set to return to Toronto for a sold-out performance at the iconic Massey Hall, a venue they described as deeply meaningful. Reflecting on their early inspiration, Martin shared, “I remember seeing The Kids [in Massey Hall] when I was 13 and that kind of changed the trajectory of my whole life.”

Although now based in Los Angeles, Martin emphasized that their creative work continues to be shaped by Canadian roots, particularly influences from artists like Sam Roberts and The Tragically Hip.

“Moving away from Canada, [I] gained a new appreciation for Toronto, and my upbringing here, and my early influences musically,” Martin said. “I think you can really feel the kind of Sam Roberts, Tragically Hip kind of warm, Canadian nostalgia.”

Beyond entertainment, Martin is also involved in a charitable art initiative, creating paintings that have raised more than $40,000 for Doctors Without Borders. Describing the project, they said, “I found it really soothing to paint animals in different emotional situations.”

Martin’s role as JUNO Awards host marks a significant milestone for representation in the entertainment industry while highlighting their growing global recognition.
