Do you know use of antibiotic drugs cause how many deaths in Pakistan?

15 November, 2024 19:51

Pakistan ranked third after China and India in terms of increase in the use of antibiotic drugs, says a study.

In Pakistan, 700,000 people die every year due to the use of antibiotic drugs, Dr. Rabia Saeed, assistant professor of family medicine, told a local TV.

She said that the unnecessary use of antibiotics in Pakistan has increased to an alarming extent. Just like every medicine has side effects, antibiotics also have side effects, which cause allergies and other problems, she added.

Dr. Rabia said that the resistance of bacteria and infections to antibiotic drugs has increased up to 50 per cent, which means that these drugs no longer have an effect on these diseases.

According to the World Health Organization, in 2019, 1.27 million people died directly due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, while about 5 million people died as a result of the complications of antimicrobial resistance.

According to the report of Oxford University Press, in the research conducted in more than 70 countries of the world, Pakistan ranks third after China and India regarding the increase in the use of antibiotic drugs. Pakistan is among the 5 countries in the world where most deaths occurred due to ‘antibacterial resistance’ during 2019.
