Heading a football can cause brain damage

02 December, 2024 23:49

A new study suggests that bouncing a soccer ball over the head during a game can cause brain damage.

MRI brain scans of male and female soccer athletes show that the process can damage parts of the brain that are already associated with weakened nervous connections, such as in chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Dr. Michael Lipton, professor of radiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and senior author of the study, said the results of the impact of repeatedly hitting the ball with the head in sports are greater than previously known.

He said the process raises concerns about adverse effects on the brain.

Dr. Michael Lipton and his colleagues will present their findings at the Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago next week.
