Presence of microplastics revealed in drip medicines

21 March, 2025 12:37

A recent study warns that medicines given to hospital patients contain thousands of dangerous plastic particles.

The study, published in the journal Environment and Health, comes at a time when concerns about the effects of microplastics are growing.

These particles were found in the human brain, heart and even mother’s milk. In the research, microplastics have been found to be associated with chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease or stomach inflammation.

And now researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai have claimed that microplastic particles can also enter the body through veins.

Many medicines are given in the hospital through plastic IV bags.

The scientists used two different brands of an 8.4-ounce IV-selene solution, which form the base for any drug injected.

Later, they scanned both the bags so that the microplastics could be seen.
