How can the risk of cancer be reduced?

20 April, 2025 13:45

Choosing a healthy lifestyle is at the top of reducing cancer risk.

The risk of cancer can be significantly reduced by following the following points through research and expert guidelines:

1. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Add more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans to the diet.

2. Limit red and processed meat.

3. Avoid sugar and ultra-processed foods. They can contribute to obesity, which is a known risk factor for cancer.

4. Do not smoke because smoking is associated with at least 15 types of cancer, not just lung cancer.

5. Quit drinking. Even small amounts can increase your risk of many cancers, especially breast and liver.

6. Protect your skin from the sun. Wear protective clothing. Look for shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

7. Be physically active. Do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Exercise helps in weight control and can reduce the risk of colon, breast and other cancers.

8. Get vaccinated. The HPV vaccine helps prevent cervical, stomach, throat, and other cancers. Similarly, the hepatitis B vaccine reduces the risk of liver cancer.

9. Know your family history as some cancers are passed down from generation to generation.

10. Avoid exposure to cancerous substances (carcinogens). Be careful about chemicals such as asbestos, radon, benzene, etc.
