One Orange a Day May Help Prevent Certain Cancers, Study Finds

13 November, 2025 12:24

A new Australian study has revealed that eating one orange a day may help prevent several types of cancer, including mouth, throat, and stomach cancers. Oranges, already known for their rich vitamin and antioxidant content, continue to prove their worth as one of the healthiest fruits in the world.

Oranges are loaded with vitamins C, A, B, and E, along with essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. Vitamin C, in particular, plays a vital role in strengthening the immune system and fighting oxidative stress. Since the human body cannot produce this vitamin, experts recommend consuming it regularly through diet.

The fruit’s high fibre content also improves digestion, increases bowel movement, and prevents constipation. Moreover, orange juice helps dissolve cholesterol into bile acids, which reduces the risk of gallstones and supports liver health. Because orange juice is made up of nearly 85% water, it also keeps the body hydrated and refreshed.

Beyond digestive benefits, a glass of orange juice at breakfast can relieve tension and stress — common triggers for many lifestyle-related diseases.

Scientists have also discovered a powerful compound in orange peels called polymethoxylated flavones (PMF). This natural compound can reduce harmful cholesterol levels by up to 40%, with fewer side effects compared to traditional cholesterol-lowering drugs. PMF also helps fight inflammation, heart disease, and cancer.

Additionally, orange peels contain pectin and oligosaccharides, which promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria and protect against intestinal infections. Researchers are now developing new methods to extract these beneficial compounds cheaply and efficiently.

The Australian study, which reviewed 48 global research cases, confirmed that daily citrus consumption not only lowers the risk of cancer but also reduces the likelihood of heart attacks by 19%. Regular intake of oranges and other citrus fruits was found to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and help the body resist infections.

In short, science is now proving what nature has always known — an orange a day may truly help keep disease away.
