Health Alert: Pakistan Confirms Rapid Spread of H3N2 “Super Flu” Variant

15 December, 2025 14:46

Health authorities in Pakistan have confirmed the circulation of a fast-spreading “super flu,” identified as the influenza A (H3N2) virus, driven by an emerging subclade known as ‘K’. The variant has been linked to a noticeable surge in flu infections across the country, with major urban centers such as Karachi and Lahore reporting the highest number of cases.

According to health officials, the H3N2 subclade K is currently the dominant strain circulating in Pakistan, reflecting a pattern seen in several parts of the world. While available evidence does not suggest that this variant causes more severe illness compared to earlier strains, its early and rapid transmission points to the possibility of a challenging flu season.

Medical experts have urged the public to remain vigilant but stressed that there is no cause for panic. So far, no deaths in Pakistan have been directly attributed to this specific variant. However, hospitals have reported an increase in flu-related admissions, particularly involving chest infections and respiratory complications.

Symptoms and Transmission

The symptoms associated with the H3N2 “super flu” are consistent with typical influenza infections. These include the sudden onset of high fever, intense muscle and joint pain, headaches, extreme fatigue, dry cough, and sore throat.

Health professionals note that children often play a key role in spreading the virus within households, increasing the risk of infection among elderly family members and individuals with weakened immune systems, who are more vulnerable to serious complications.

Health Advice and Preventive Measures

Health experts, in line with guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), continue to recommend standard preventive steps to limit the spread of the virus.

Vaccination:
Seasonal influenza vaccination is strongly advised for everyone aged six months and older, particularly high-risk groups such as older adults, pregnant women, young children, and people with chronic health conditions. Experts note that even if the circulating strain differs slightly from the vaccine formulation, immunization significantly lowers the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.

Hygiene Practices:

Authorities recommend wearing masks in crowded public places, washing hands frequently with soap and water, ensuring good ventilation in indoor spaces, and maintaining distance from individuals showing flu-like symptoms.

If Symptoms Appear:

People experiencing flu symptoms are advised to stay at home, get adequate rest, and maintain hydration with fluids and warm drinks. Self-medication with antibiotics is discouraged, as they are ineffective against viral infections. Medical attention should be sought promptly if symptoms persist for several days, worsen, or are accompanied by breathing difficulties.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely as the flu season unfolds, urging the public to follow preventive measures to reduce the impact of the outbreak.
