Overuse of Nasal Sprays Can Cause Irreversible Damage, Warn UK Health Experts

09 January, 2026 11:08

Health experts in the UK have issued a serious warning about the overuse of decongestant nasal sprays. They say excessive use can cause long-term and sometimes irreversible damage to nasal passages.

The concern comes as cases of nasal spray dependency continue to rise, especially during the cold and flu season.

Why Nasal Spray Overuse Is a Problem

Decongestant sprays are cheap and widely available from UK chemists, costing less than four pounds. Many people rely on them for quick relief from blocked noses caused by colds, flu, or allergies.

However, experts warn that the ease of access and instant relief often lead users to ignore the recommended usage limits. Over time, this can create serious health risks.

Study Shows Lack of Awareness

A recent study found that nearly 60% of nasal spray users are unaware that these sprays should not be used for extended periods. Many unknowingly put themselves at risk of a condition called rebound congestion, where the nasal blockage returns worse than before once the spray wears off.

Medical Risks of Long-Term Use

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society cautions that prolonged use can inflame and swell the delicate blood vessels in the nose. Instead of easing congestion, it can make breathing harder.

This condition, known as rhinitis medicamentosa, may cause:

  • Persistent nasal congestion

  • Irritation inside the nose

  • Runny nose

  • Frequent sneezing

In severe cases, long-term swelling may not respond to medication. Some patients may even need surgery to correct permanent nasal damage.

Scope of the Problem

Experts estimate that around 5.5 million people in the UK are at risk of developing dependency on nasal sprays. Health officials are urging users to follow recommended limits and seek medical advice if congestion persists.
