The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to announce the Pakistan captain on Sunday as the selections committee heads to Kakul where the cricketers after training.

The selectors are expected to meet Babar Azam and others during the fitness camp.

The prolific batter emerged as the front-line candidate to take over the captaincy from Shaheen Shah Afridi, who failed to impress with his performance.

Shaheen took over T20I captaincy from Babar back in November and on his first assignment against New Zealand, Pakistan suffered a 4-1 defeat in T20Is.

His captaincy again came under scrutiny after defending HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions Lahore Qalanders were dumped out from the tournament after six defeats in a row.

They only managed to win one game during the tournament.

On the other hand, Babar Azam was impressive with the bat as well as the leader of Peshawar Zalmi, who reached eliminators of the tournament. He finished as the top runs getter in the tournament with 559.

His performance not only impress selectors but put him back in a strong position for the post.

Mohammad Rizwan was the other candidate for the role, however, he reportedly declined the offer.

The final decision will be made after the meeting in Kakul. Babar has reportedly asked for the captaincy of all three formats.

They would announce the decision via press conference on Sunday.
