SC orders govt to set up Climate Change Authority

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the federal government to set up a climate change authority within two weeks.
A written order on the May 6 hearing on the establishment of the climate change authority has been issued today.
The order says that failure to establish the authority will have serious implications on the fundamental rights of the people. With the establishment of climate change, the government should also arrange funds for it, it added. Climate change is the most serious threat facing the people.
Earlier, in view of the seriousness of the issue, the Climate Change Act was enacted in 2017. Despite the passage of seven years, the authority has not been established and the funds could not be released. Punjab, KP and Sindh have submitted their policies to deal with climate change.
Later, the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing till June 3.
