IHC stops govt from blocking SIMs of non-filers
The Islamabad High Court has stopped the government from blocking the mobile phone SIMs of tax non-filers.
Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamir Farooq heard the petition of a private telecom company against blocking mobile phone SIMs of non-filers.
On this occasion, Salman Akram Raja Advocate appeared in the court on behalf of a private mobile phone company and said that the amendment in the law is against the fundamental right to freedom of business in Article 18 of the Constitution.
Justice Aamir Farooq, on the request of a private mobile company, issued an injunction not to block mobile SIMs of non-filers till May 27 and stopped the government from blocking SIMs.
It should be noted that the telecom companies have assured Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb that mobile phone operators will block 5,000 SIMs of those who do not submit income tax returns daily.
According to FBR, on May 10, the details of SIM blocking of 5,000 non-filers were provided to the telecom operators.
The FBR officials said that telecom operators have agreed to manually block SIMs in small batches.
