Pakistan Railways jacks up train fares

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has announced fare hike for all trains, effective Friday, July 19.
According to a notification issued on Thursday, fares will increase by 1% for mail, express, intercity, and passenger trains, including outsourced services. Freight and goods trains will see a 2% increase in fares.
This development comes days after government announced increase in fuel prices.
Separately, in a crackdown on ticketless passengers over the last six months, PR collected over Rs 76 million from 59,143 passengers found traveling without tickets. The amount was deposited into the department’s official bank account.
Sources in the Ministry revealed that ticketless traveling is illegal and those caught without a ticket are charged the full journey fare plus a penalty. Those who fail to pay are handed over to the railway police. The crackdown on ticketless passengers is a regular occurrence, with PR staffers and railway police working together to ensure compliance.
