After Senate, National Assembly also approves 26th constitutional amendment
After the Senate, the National Assembly also approved 26th constitutional amendments after the government managed to secure a two-thirds majority in both the houses.
During the passage of the first two clauses, 12 members of the opposition voted against it, but later the opposition members boycotted and walked out of the House.
The government required 224 votes to approve the 26th constitutional amendment in the House, but during the clause-by-clause approval of the amendment, 225 members voted in favour of the amendment.
Six dissident members also voted in favour of the constitutional amendment, out of which five belong to PTI while one is said to belong to PML-Q.
Expressing his views on the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed a historic day for Pakistan after the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment in the National Assembly.
He added: “Today, it’s been decided that Parliament reigns supreme. As 225 members, including coalition partners and independent lawmakers, voted in favour of the bill.”
Later, Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq adjourned the meeting till 5 pm on Tuesday.
