In a shocking incident at the Sang Jani Toll Plaza in Islamabad, unidentified assailants on Friday launched an attack on vans transporting prisoners.
The incident occurred as 187 detainees, arrested during the recent protests at D-Chowk, were being transferred to Attock Jail following a court appearance.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the attack targeted three prisoner vans. Among those onboard were several members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, including MPAs Anwar Zaib, Liaquat, and Yasir Qureshi.
Along with the politicians, the vans also carried detained government employees and police personnel.
The attackers opened fire on the vehicles, puncturing their tires and creating chaos that allowed several inmates to escape.
Police sources have confirmed that multiple officers were injured during the attack and were swiftly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
In the wake of the incident, law enforcement agencies launched a manhunt and successfully recaptured several escapees. Notably, one of those apprehended is reported to be the son of an MPA.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the identities of the attackers and the reasons behind the brazen assault.
