02 November, 2024 11:15

Smog-hit Lahore on Saturday ranked at the top of the global pollution rankings with hazardous air quality.

The city’s air quality index was recorded at more than 1,000, after which Lahore once again became the most polluted city in the world.

The Punjab provincial capital’s air quality reached 1067 at around 9:30 am on the global pollution chart released by Switzerland’s air quality watchdog, which shows the most harmful levels of pollution despite the provincial government’s efforts to combat smog.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), burning of seasonal crops by farmers on the outskirts of Lahore also produces toxic air, which can cause paralysis, heart diseases, lung cancer in addition to respiratory diseases.

Smog caused by pollution in Lahore is causing serious problems for residents, especially those working outside, with citizens working in polluted air reporting difficulty in breathing, coughing and burning eyes.
