Protest over power outages disrupt traffic on major Karachi roads

08 November, 2024 21:01

A protest by residents of Baloch Colony in Karachi on Friday caused significant traffic disruptions on the Shaheed-e-Millat flyover.

The demonstrators were voicing their frustration over ongoing power outages and water shortages in the area.

The protest, which began in the morning, involved residents blocking both lanes of the flyover for several hours, resulting in heavy traffic congestion.

Commuters were stuck in gridlocks for extended periods, as the protestors demanded the immediate restoration of water and electricity services.

After two hours of negotiations between the protesters and local authorities, a resolution was reached. Authorities assured the residents that both electricity and water supplies would be restored soon, leading to the suspension of the protest.

However, traffic remained disrupted for several more hours until police intervened to disperse the demonstrators and reopen the flyover.

In response to the protest, K-Electric clarified that the power outage in Baloch Colony was not linked to the demonstration, stating that electricity supply in the area was functioning normally.

Local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and address the residents’ concerns regarding utility services.
