PM directs further reduction in electricity prices

13 December, 2024 20:51

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the government to further reduce electricity rates for consumers and expedite the implementation of the country’s future electricity generation strategy.

Chairing a meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister stressed that only low-cost electricity projects should be prioritized moving forward.

Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of utilizing local resources for power generation, highlighting the potential of hydropower projects as affordable and environmentally friendly sources of electricity. He also urged the conversion of existing power generation to solar energy, citing its low cost and global adoption.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of ongoing hydropower projects and directed the immediate closure of inefficient power plants that produce more electricity with higher fuel consumption.

The closure of these plants is expected to save foreign exchange spent on fuel imports and reduce electricity costs for consumers. He also called for immediate action against any officials hindering reforms in the power sector.

In addition, Shehbaz Sharif instructed the government to modernize the power transmission system and ensure the use of modern technology to select and transmit low-cost electricity.

The meeting also discussed the progress of ongoing reforms and new proposed projects in the power sector, with the Prime Minister emphasizing that all measures should be completed within the stipulated time frame.
