Military courts convict 25 suspects: ISPR
The Military Courts convicted 25 suspects of May 9 violence on Saturday after examining all the evidence and completing the appropriate legal process, ISPR said.
“Field General Court Martial (FGCM) have in [the] first phase promulgated the punishments to 25 accused,” according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The suspects have been awarded up to 10 years imprisonment.
The verdicts were announced after the Supreme Court’s (SC) Constitutional Bench conditionally allowed military courts to do so in 85 trials.
ISPR added that the promulgation of the sentences of remaining accused is also being done and will be announced shortly after completion of process.
“All convicts retain the right to appeal and other legal recourses, as guaranteed by the law and the Constitution,” the ISPR said in the statement.
Following that arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, a violent protest broke out across Pakistan.
In turn, scores of PTI workers were arrested and more than 100 civilians are facing military trials.
