Over 40 Pakistani migrants feared dead in Spain boat sinking
At least 50 people, including 44 Pakistanis, have died following a boat accident off the coast of Spain. The vessel, which was carrying migrants from Mauritania, sank while en route from West Africa to Spain.
A total of 86 migrants were aboard, of whom 36 were rescued. The victims had been at sea for 13 days before the boat sank, with no rescue operation taking place until it was too late.
Among the deceased, 12 were young residents of Gujrat, Pakistan. The boat had departed from Mauritania on January 2, but it went missing six days ago.
According to migrant rights group Walking Borders, the boat was reported to authorities in the concerned countries but was not rescued in time. Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service received an alert on January 12 but claimed they had no information about the boat.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences and ordered an investigation into the incident. He also condemned human trafficking and vowed to take strict action against those responsible for the tragedy.
The deadly incident comes after a similar tragedy off the coast of Greece last month, where six Pakistanis lost their lives in a boat accident.
