Afaq Ahmed arrested after Karachi dumper burning incidents

11 February, 2025 23:47

Karachi police have arrested Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM-H) Chairman Afaq Ahmed for allegedly inciting violence that led to citizens setting multiple cargo trucks on fire in protest against traffic accidents.

According to police sources, Ahmed was taken into custody from his residence in Defence by Landhi police.

Authorities claim that his remarks in a recent press conference encouraged people to attack heavy vehicles violating traffic restrictions.

Karachi has witnessed over 100 traffic-related deaths in the first 41 days of 2025. Frustration over the rising casualties led Ahmed to issue an ultimatum, demanding a complete ban on heavy traffic during restricted hours.

“If heavy vehicles are seen on the roads, they should be rendered unusable,” he had stated.

Following his comments, groups of individuals intercepted and set fire to at least seven trucks in areas including Korangi, Landhi, and Surjani Town.

The police have launched an investigation into the incidents, with Ahmed now facing legal action.
