Minister announces reduction in train fares
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has unveiled plans to launch four special Eid trains starting from the 25th of Ramadan, offering passengers up to 20% fare discounts during the festive period.
Abbasi emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing Pakistan Railways, including implementing privatization policies and addressing long-standing security concerns.
He acknowledged issues such as malfunctioning scanners at railway stations, which have contributed to smuggling and theft, and pledged to reinforce railway security, mirroring the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) model.
Focusing on freight services, Abbasi announced an initiative to double cargo operations and integrate Thar Coal into the railway network for efficient transportation.
He also confirmed the procurement of 245 new coaches from China, alongside plans to enhance local manufacturing capabilities for railway coaches and locomotives.
On the ML-1 railway project, he revealed that discussions are ongoing with multiple international partners, though final agreements are yet to be made.
