Targeting religious scholars is not jihad, says Fazlur Rehman
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has condemned the assassination of Maulana Hamidul Haq, stating that targeting religious scholars is an act of terrorism, not jihad.
Speaking at Darul Uloom Haqqania during a condolence visit, Fazl said those responsible for the killing of his former teacher are not mujahideen but murderers. He stressed that it is impossible to call a slain religious scholar a martyr while labeling the killer a mujahid.
Maulana Hamidul Haq, leader of JUI-S and son of late Maulana Samiul Haq, was assassinated in a suicide attack at his seminary in Akora Khattak. Samiul Haq was a key figure in both the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban.
Fazl criticized extremist elements for attacking religious scholars and mosques, referencing a recent killing in Balochistan. He warned against any potential operation at Darul Uloom Haqqania, stating that any such move would have consequences.
Calling extremist ideologies fleeting, he said madaris and ulema would prevail. He expressed deep sorrow over Hamidul Haq’s killing, likening it to a personal loss.
