Dubai-based businessman Umar Farooq awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz for investment in Pakistan
President Asif Ali Zardari has conferred the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors, on Dubai-based businessman Umar Farooq Zahoor in recognition of his contributions to the country’s economy, particularly in attracting substantial foreign direct investment (FDI).
Zahoor was among over 100 individuals, including both Pakistani and foreign nationals, who received civil awards at a special Pakistan Day investiture ceremony held at the President House. The award was approved by the president in August last year.
Government sources stated that Umar Farooq Zahoor has brought over $700 million in direct foreign investment to Pakistan in the last three years. His investments have been directed toward key sectors such as infrastructure, ports, logistics, energy, agriculture, IT, and real estate. Additionally, ongoing projects worth over $2 billion are reportedly in progress across various industries. Zahoor has also played a role in strengthening economic ties between Pakistan and Gulf nations by leveraging his regional network.
Speaking after receiving the award, Zahoor expressed gratitude, stating that the recognition was a moment of “pride and honor” and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic growth.
In a separate development, Zahoor was recently appointed as a Pro Bono Ambassador at Large by the Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), an independent intergovernmental observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
According to an official letter from IIMSAM Secretary General Remigio Maradona, Zahoor will work on combating global malnutrition by overseeing the distribution of Spirulina, a highly nutritious micro-alga, particularly in underserved regions, including Pakistan. His role aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (2020-2030) under the Decade of Action initiative.
IIMSAM, recognized under ECOSOC Resolution 2003, focuses on addressing global malnutrition through the promotion and distribution of Spirulina.
