Punjab Schools Introduce Casual Dress Code Amid Heatwave Concerns

09 April, 2025 12:41

The Punjab government has changed its school uniform policy in light of the expected summer temperatures, and students will be able to wear casual clothes instead of uniforms starting May 1. The Punjab School Education Department (SED) stated that the new dress code will be effective from May 1 until September 15, covering the post-summer vacation term, and will be implemented as students come back to school.

New Guidelines for Students

The SED has sent specific guidance regarding this to school leaders indicating that while students can dress casually, they may not wear makeup, jewelry, flashy clothing, or any fabric such as silk. The intention of these restrictions is to help students project a modest and school-appropriate appearance.

Dress Code Regulations for Teachers

According to the new policy, female teachers must wear shalwar kameez with a dupatta. They are explicitly prohibited from wearing jeans and t-shirts. Male teachers are permitted to wear jeans and t-shirts.

Student Reactions and Implementation

The students have embraced the decision, expressing that they appreciate the relaxed dress code will allow them to wear light, breathable cotton clothing, making their time in school more comfortable when extreme temperatures affect school. Many students also expressed their support for banning makeup. They argued that schools should be focused on academics, and not the students’ appearance.

Government Initiatives and Religious Accommodations

Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, reaffirmed her dedication to offering quality education and shelter to orphaned children living in SOS Villages, which she sees as an essential move towards enhancing the wellbeing of underprivileged young people. Moreover, provincial officials have directed schools to make arrangements for students to perform Zohar prayers during the school calendar, accommodating student school hours.
