To Save Water, Punjab Bans Car Wash Stations

10 April, 2025 12:19

LAHORE: The Punjab government has banned the opening of new car wash stations as the province faces a worsening water shortage.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Punjab, rainfall between September 2024 and January 2025 was 42% below normal. This, along with rapid urbanisation, unplanned groundwater extraction, and climate change, has led to a serious decline in water levels across the province.

“Underground water is being used faster than it is being naturally refilled,” said Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of EPA Punjab. “If we don’t act now, future generations will suffer from severe water scarcity.”

As part of the new measures, all existing car wash stations are required to install water recycling systems by February 28, 2025. Failure to comply will result in a Rs100,000 fine or sealing of the business. Washing cars at home using hosepipes will also be fined Rs10,000.

Environmental expert Dr. Maria Qureshi said, “A single car wash can use up to 300 litres of clean water. Without recycling systems, that’s a huge waste in a water-stressed region like Punjab. These rules are essential.”

The Lahore High Court has also urged the government to take strict action against water wastage, especially in urban areas like Lahore, where underground water levels are dropping at an alarming rate.

Hydrologist Engineer Salman Raza added, “The water table in Lahore is falling by nearly one meter each year. If steps like this aren’t taken, we’re heading toward a crisis.”

The Punjab government says the restrictions are being implemented under the Punjab Environmental Protection Act, 1997, and are focused on long-term sustainability.

Environmental groups and professionals have welcomed the move and called on the public to support these efforts. “Water is no longer a resource we can take for granted,” said Dr. Qureshi. “It’s time to change our habits.
