Good News: Passport process going fully online in Pakistan

Good news for Pakistani citizens – getting a passport will soon be much easier. The entire process is being shifted online to remove the need for visiting passport offices.

Mustafa Jamal Qazi, the Director General of Immigration and Passports, announced that a mobile application will be launched in the next couple of months, allowing people to apply and pay for their passport fees online. A web version of the service is already available.

Qazi confirmed that the whole process—from applying to receiving the e-passport—will now be done online. The passport will even be delivered to the applicant’s doorstep, whether they live in Pakistan or abroad.

He also mentioned some of the issues faced when he took charge, such as shortages of lamination paper and ink, which caused passport delays. He acknowledged the contributions of the interior minister, the prime minister, and other senior officials for helping with the backlog of passports.

To ensure safety, Qazi added that the Directorate General’s building is now marked as “critical infrastructure,” meaning only authorized people can access it. This move aims to protect the system and keep the process secure.
