Former JI Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmad Passes Away at 93

Professor Khurshid Ahmad, a distinguished economist and former Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) senator, passed away in the United Kingdom on Sunday at the age of 93. He will be laid to rest in Leicester, where he had been an active member of the local Muslim community.

Prof Ahmad was one of the last remaining companions of Maulana Abul Ala Maududi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, and a towering figure in the development of Islamic economics. He was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 2010 in recognition of his contributions to academia and public service.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other national leaders paid tribute to him, acknowledging his lifelong dedication to scholarship, policymaking, and Islamic values.

A JI spokesperson remembered him as, “A visionary Islamic economist, scholar, and thought leader, Professor Khurshid Ahmad dedicated his life to intellectual excellence, policy development, and the service of knowledge rooted in Islamic values. His contributions to education, economics, and public discourse have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations.”

According to reports, he served as chairman of the Markfield Institute of Higher Education in Leicester and was a former federal minister for commerce and planning in 1978. He also played a pivotal role in establishing the Institute of Policy Studies in Islamabad.

Born in New Delhi in 1932, Prof Ahmad completed a double major in Economics and Islamic Studies with distinction. He served multiple terms in the Senate in 1985, 1997, and 2002, and was a prolific author, having written over 70 books in both English and Urdu. He was also the editor of JI’s monthly journal, Tarjamanul Quran.

His legacy as an intellectual and policymaker will continue to influence generations to come.
