Indian airlines face major delays as Pakistan bans airspace

26 April, 2025 17:37

The ongoing shutdown of Pakistani airspace to Indian flights has entered its second day, severely disrupting international air travel and causing widespread delays, operational challenges, and financial strain on Indian airlines.

The airspace closure has forced Indian carriers to reroute flights, resulting in longer flying times, increased costs, and scheduling chaos.

Widespread Impact on Indian Flights

Aviation sources confirm that between 70 and 85 Indian commercial flights have been directly affected by the ban. These flights are now being forced to take longer routes to avoid Pakistani airspace, with travel times increasing by two to three hours depending on the destination. For many international routes, especially transcontinental flights, the delays have been severe.

One of the most significantly impacted routes is the transcontinental travel to North America and Europe. Flights connecting India with the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have seen serious delays, with other European destinations like Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Denmark also experiencing longer travel times and disrupted schedules.

Rising Operational Costs and Delays

The rerouting of flights has come at a steep financial cost. Airlines are facing soaring operational expenses due to higher fuel consumption, extra airport parking fees, and additional accommodation charges for both crew and passengers stuck by delays. Some flights have been delayed by as much as 10 hours, creating a logistical nightmare for both travelers and airline operations.

Middle Eastern destinations like Dubai, Muscat, Sharjah, Bahrain, and Baku have also felt the effects, with airlines needing more fuel to operate longer flights.

Airlines and Charter Flights Affected

The airspace restriction is not limited to regular commercial flights; special and chartered flights have also been impacted. Five major Indian commercial airlines are reported to be among those facing disruptions due to the ongoing restrictions, which have also affected high-priority air traffic.

Tensions Escalate as Aviation Struggles

The shutdown represents a significant escalation in geopolitical tensions between the two nations and highlights the ripple effect such disputes can have on global aviation. As the situation continues, airlines are scrambling to adjust their schedules and realign their operations in order to minimize the impact on passengers and maintain essential services.

Global Travel Implications

Aviation officials are closely monitoring the situation as the ongoing disruption affects not only airlines but tens of thousands of travelers worldwide. The financial burden on airlines and the logistical challenges faced by travelers are a stark reminder of how border tensions can extend far beyond regional concerns, affecting global supply chains and travel systems.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen when Pakistani airspace will reopen to Indian flights, and what the long-term implications will be for both nations’ aviation industries.
