Islamabad to launch first electric tram service soon
Islamabad is planning to introduce its first electric tram service as part of efforts to improve public transport and promote eco-friendly travel.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA), under instructions from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, has started working on a feasibility study for this new project.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa shared that the electric tram system will support the existing electric bus network in the city. A meeting was recently held between CDA officials and the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) to discuss technical details and the project plan.
Chairman Randhawa emphasized that upgrading Islamabad’s transport system is a top priority. He said the electric trams and feeder buses will not only improve daily travel but also help reduce pollution and reliance on fuel.
He also mentioned that trams will be designed to carry more passengers and be accessible to women and people with disabilities.
Sources said a Chinese company will likely handle the feasibility study. In the first phase, the tram will operate on four main routes, including one from Rawat to Faisal Mosque and another from Jinnah Square to the Islamabad Airport.
