In a progressive move towards sustainable transport, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the green light to the financial model for the province’s e-taxi project. According to sources, this approval follows a consensus to roll out a pilot fleet of 1,100 electric taxis across the province.
During a high-level meeting chaired by CM Maryam, it was decided that the e-taxi initiative will incorporate solar-powered charging stations to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The overarching aim of the project is to modernize public transport and make commuting more eco-friendly and accessible for citizens of Punjab.
The meeting also reviewed the broader landscape of mass transit initiatives. Officials presented the feasibility study of the Yellow Line mass transit system and shared updates on the province’s green e-taxi vision. In addition, CM Maryam requested detailed route proposals for the Gujranwala segment of the mass transit network.
Stressing the importance of public convenience, CM Maryam directed that route planning for all transit projects should prioritize ease of access for the people. She instructed authorities to kickstart work on the Yellow Line immediately, with the initial route stretching from Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura.
The briefing further highlighted that the Punjab government plans to offer subsidies under the e-taxi scheme, making it more affordable for participants. Authorities are also considering integrating electric charging infrastructure alongside existing petrol stations to support the rollout.
