Kartarpur Corridor Reopened by Pakistan Post-Ceasefire, Indian Side Still Closed
Pakistan has reopened the Kartarpur Corridor for Sikh pilgrims shortly after announcing a ceasefire agreement with India, according to reports. However, India has yet to reciprocate, leaving the cross-border religious passage closed.
The corridor, which was initially shut on May 7 following Indian drone strikes on Pakistani territory, has seen limited activity since. While Pakistani authorities restored access from their side, the Zero Line Gate on the Indian side remains shut, preventing Indian Sikh devotees from crossing over.
Kartarpur Corridor management stated that India has not provided any updates regarding the resumption of pilgrim movement. As a result, despite the arrival of both local and overseas Sikh pilgrims on the Pakistani side, cross-border travel remains suspended.
On May 9, the corridor was non-functional for a third straight day. Subsequently, due to the lack of coordination from the Indian side, the management decided to close the corridor indefinitely.
India officially suspended the corridor on May 8, 2025, citing security concerns amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan. The suspension has affected thousands of Sikh devotees who frequently visit the revered Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, the final resting place of Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Launched in 2019, the Kartarpur Corridor allowed visa-free entry for Indian Sikh pilgrims and was considered a major step in promoting religious harmony between the two countries.
