Upcoming public holiday in Pakistan for May 2025 announced

13 May, 2025 12:13

ISLAMABAD – After marking Labour Day on May 1, Pakistanis are now getting ready to observe another important national holiday—Youm-e-Takbeer, which falls on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

This day holds deep emotional meaning for many citizens. It’s not just a date on the calendar—it’s a proud reminder of the moment Pakistan became a nuclear power. On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted a series of nuclear tests in Chaghi, Balochistan, and changed the course of its defense history forever.

The tests made Pakistan the seventh nuclear country in the world, and importantly, the first Muslim nation to possess nuclear weapons. It was a huge moment of pride and strength for the entire nation.

The path to that achievement wasn’t easy. Back in the 1970s, former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had made a bold promise: “Even if we have to eat grass, we will build the bomb.” Years later, in 1998, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took a brave stand against heavy international pressure and gave the green light for the nuclear tests.

Since then, May 28 has been remembered every year as Youm-e-Takbeer—the “Day of Greatness.” It’s a day when Pakistanis reflect on their national strength, unity, and sacrifices. Schools, offices, and businesses across the country will remain closed as part of the official holiday announced in the 2025 federal holiday schedule.

Special programs are expected on TV and radio to highlight the importance of this day. From school events to social media tributes, people across the country will honor those who played a role in making Pakistan’s defense strong and secure.
