Hassan Nawaz No Longer Bankrupt, UK Authorities Allow Resumption of Business

15 May, 2025 14:50

London – Hassan Nawaz, the son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is no longer bankrupt, according to the UK tax authorities, clearing the way for him to resume normal business activities and once again serve as a company director.

Public records confirm that his bankruptcy officially ended on April 29, 2025, following the standard one-year term under UK insolvency laws. The UK’s Insolvency Service and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) verified the discharge and confirmed no evidence of financial misconduct was found.

Roughly two months before the discharge, Hassan Nawaz had filed for bankruptcy, citing a nearly £10 million tax bill. He challenged the legitimacy of the demand, asserting that the taxes had already been settled and that HMRC’s claim was filed too late. The bankruptcy notice was published in the official gazette, drawing widespread media coverage and sparking political debate in Pakistan.

With the end of his bankruptcy, all associated restrictions—such as limitations on serving as a company director and accessing credit—have been lifted. UK law permits a person to fully resume financial and business activities after such a discharge.

HMRC clarified that the discharge was procedural and does not imply any fault on Hassan Nawaz’s part. The agency also confirmed he is not under any ongoing investigation.

Analysts suggest this could enable Hassan Nawaz to return to the UK business scene, where he was previously involved. However, the matter remains politically sensitive in Pakistan, where the Sharif family’s financial affairs continue to draw close attention.
