An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Swat and its surrounding regions on Sunday, sparking panic among local residents.
According to seismic monitoring authorities, the quake’s epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush mountain range, a region known for its frequent tectonic activity. The tremors originated at a depth of 205 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, allowing the shockwaves to be felt across a wide area despite the deep focus.
So far, no casualties or property damage have been reported. Authorities continue to closely observe the situation and remain alert for potential aftershocks.
This is the second recent quake to affect the region. On May 2, 2025, another earthquake was recorded in Swat and nearby districts. That quake, measuring 4.8 in magnitude, also originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan and had a depth of 140 kilometres, according to the National Seismological Centre.
Both events have reinforced the seismic vulnerability of the region, which sits along a geologically active fault line.
