The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a heatwave alert for the province as temperatures are expected to rise significantly between May 20 and May 24. The alert, issued under the directives of the Chief Minister Punjab, urges citizens and institutions to prepare for extreme weather conditions.
Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain vigilant. “District administration and relevant departments should stay on alert in view of the possible heatwave,” he said.
In response, alerts have been sent to departments including school education, health, transport, local government, Rescue 1122, and others, emphasizing the need for immediate precautionary measures.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, there is a risk of 5 to 7°C above-normal temperatures in major cities and plain areas of the province during the specified period. Strong winds and dust storms may also accompany the heatwave in some regions.
“From May 20 to May 24, there is a risk of rising temperatures and a possible heatwave in major cities and plain areas of Punjab,” said the PDMA representative.
The DG PDMA has further instructed authorities to ensure the availability of clean drinking water in public areas and to prepare hospitals and mobile health units for heatstroke emergencies. “The public must also remain cautious due to the intensity of heat and heatwave,” he said, adding that workers exposed to midday heat must take necessary precautions.
